After four months of winter training, race season is finally here. I started off my season with the VMS and TCC Criterium and 20k TT in Monroe, LA. These races were also my first cycling specific races since making the switch from triathlon.

I was definitely nervous about my first cat 5 crit. I really didn’t know what to expect and had no idea what the skill level of the other riders would be. After a few laps, my nerves were gone and I felt very comfortable. I tested the field a few times to see if anyone would come off the front and work with me. No one seemed to want to work. With four laps to go I picked up the pace, reducing the field to three.

With one lap to go, I picked it up before the second to last turn creating a small gap then sprinted out of the last turn for the win.

On Sunday, it was TT time. After training hard all winter, I was excited to really get a feel for where I am physically on the TT bike. So with my speedsuit on and TT helmet strapped, I took off.

It’s amazing how much better it feels to ride with all aero gear… wheels, helmet, suit etc. Amazing difference.

As you can see by the grimace on my face, it is still a game of “how much pain can you stand.”

I finished my 20k with a time of 27:27. Faster than I had anticipated! This landed me second overall for all categories.

I couldn’t have asked for a better first race weekend, and look forward to the coming season.
